What can I do now that we were not able to do a year ago?
I am now able to attend lessons from my home, in my bed, with my hot coffee, thanks to Covid-19 and the lockdown. Now that everything is online, I can work and learn at the same time. I was able to watch the recorded sessions whenever I wanted instead of having to attend the class, which allowed me to focus on my career. There are no paper courses since they are all saved on my desktop, so I won't lose any of them or, at the very least, I won't have to wait until the following day to copy them from my buddies. We must all incorporate technology into our studies, work, and everyday lives, and as a result, we will have a society with increased understanding of technology and how to use various apps and platforms. Online learning allows for the effective integration of educational games, allowing students to benefit from them and improve their learning progress.
Challenges I face when learning/teaching online
Because students and teachers in Lebanon have been accustomed to traditional learning for many years, switching from face-to-face learning to computer-based instruction in a virtual class required some time. When learning online, some students may experience issues with energy and the internet, and as you are aware, we are in Lebanon. Problems may arise as a result of devices that are too old to comply with the course management system, as well as a shortage of devices if more than one student lives in the same residence. Computer literacy is a big issue among today's pupils, with the majority of them unable to utilize simple programs or handle fundamental computer problems due to a lack of knowledge in this area. Self-motivation is a crucial component of online learning, but many people overlook it and quit up because the hurdles of navigating a technological medium appear overwhelming.
How to avoid problems when teaching online
Covid-19 changes learning from on-ground to online. In teaching online, students must be independent and must prepare an atmosphere that emphasizes their responsibility for their own learning. Goal orientation is necessary to complete their work and collaborate with their peers and know how to use tools to catch information easily. Online learning requires the use of computers, so students must be taught basic computer skills to communicate with teachers and friends.
These are some tips for enhancing online teaching:
- post a recording for the session
- open your camera during the session (eye contact)
- use videos for illustration and make them short
- give instructions
- provide interactive activities (integrate educational games)
- use group communication (with the help of many applications and websites)
How to be a digital citizen?
A digital citizen is someone who has learned how to effectively utilize the internet and digital technologies in order to interact and participate in society and politics in a responsible and appropriate manner. To be a good digital citizen, you must first establish a good digital impression by spreading pleasant vibrations and always be courteous, encouraging others to do the same. Second, information that is sexually suggestive should be avoided. Finally, you should not steal other people's ideas and should cite the source if you utilize someone else's words.
Tools that can be used in online assessment
Assessment is perhaps one of the most difficult aspects of virtual learning. The teacher's observations, the quantifiable exam given, and the students' performance as a presentation make up assessment. When students were in real courses, a teacher used to assess each student at the end of each session. But there is a solution to every difficulty! Google Forms is one of the most useful tools. It enables teachers to create exams with a range of question kinds, such as multiple choice, true false, short and lengthy responses. Zoom is useful for performing group work in break rooms. If a teacher wishes to assess her pupils' knowledge or get comments, a poll anywhere is a suitable option. Students can use Mentimeter and Google Slides to create presentations, which aids the teacher in performance evaluations. Finally, Kahoot and Wordwall are intriguing tools for creating game-like quizzes. All of the programs and tools are available to the teacher. She can manage the best way to use them according to her purpose.
Integrating technology into teaching
The use of technology in the classroom has sparked a heated controversy. It is critical for kids to study and enhance their technological abilities in order to succeed in school, such as improving computer skills(Microsoft office), using Google apps.... It should not, however, be the sole instrument employed in education. When employing technology, the instructor must have complete control over the kids, which is not always achievable. Students lose control and get distracted, focusing on social media. According to my experience, I am still troubled by social media as I grow older, and I feel it causes students to miss a lot of valuable ideas and maybe will be lost. to that it should be controlled.
